Relentless climate change 2025

Here are the changes in temperature and atmospheric CO₂ concentration over recent decades (temperature: 85 years; CO₂: 67 years; Fig. 1). That is, CO₂ continues to accumulate in the atmosphere, and temperatures keep rising relentlessly. There is a strong correlation between global air temperature and CO₂ (Fig. 2). Obviously, CO₂ is not the only cause of increasing temperature; there are other greenhouse gases. Note also that the data series begin in 1940 (temperature) and 1958 (CO₂), although human-caused climate change began much earlier, around 1890 [1].

Figure 1. Global surface temperature (daily; left) and atmospheric CO concentration (monthly; right) along the year. Data from 1940 (temperature) and 1958 (CO) to 2025. In red are the values for 2025; in orange for the year I was born! So I have witnessed an increase of 107 ppm (33.5%) in atmospheric CO₂ levels.
Figure 2. Relationship between atmospheric CO concentration (in ppm) and global surface air temperature (oC); data are annual averages from 1958 to 2025.
